HOW TO: Check Domain Expiration Date

When your Domain Name is near its Expiry Date, your Domain will go into the Renewal Due status as early as 90 days before the actual Expiry Date. Checking the domain expiration date frequently can prevent you from losing your Domain.

You may check your domain expiration date here:

  • For All Domains Name> WHOIS
  • For .my / .com.my / .net.my / .org.my> MYNIC

Now you know the way to check your domain expiration date. Here are some Frequently Asked Question that might clear your doubts regarding the domain expiration date:

1) What is a Domain Name?

Domain name is an identifier string that identifiers within the internet a domain of administrative autonomy, authority, or power. We use the Domain name in different networking contexts and for application-specific naming and addressing purposes. Generally, a Domain name defines a network domain or describes an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer that we use to access the Internet, a website hosting server or a website itself or some other internet-based service. The examples are .com , .net , .edu , .org etc.

2) Why do I Need to Know the Domain Expiration Date?

Think about it, if you do not know the expiration date of your domain name, all the time and effort you’ve put into developing your brand is now in jeopardy if you let the expiration lapse. While you are holding your domain right now, the ownership can just slip away easily if you do not take precautions. To avoid this issue happens, you need to constantly keep track of the expiration date.

On the other hand, if you know of a “dead site” with a good domain name or if you just want to keep track of certain domains, you will want to know as soon as the expiration date comes up. This helps you to be the first to bid on it when it goes to auction.

3) What Happens When a Domain Name Expires?

When the expiration date passes, there are some stages to go through. At first, the hosting companies will most probably contact the owner with a number of billing attempts to renew the domain. After that, there is a grace period where the owner can repurchase the domain tied together with an additional “redemption fee.” If the owner doesn’t get in touch and does not pay the fee, then the domain is set for auction. If the auction period ends and nobody purchases, it will get added back to the registry where everyone can purchase on the open market.

4) How Do the Tools (as Mentioned above) Work?

The tools- WHOIS and MYNIC are quite simple. You can just copy/paste a domain name into the text box and press enter to check the domain expiration date. The checker will tell you if the domain is available if somebody has registered it and has an expiration date.
